Chapter Twelve

Louisa

My lunch break was nearly over, but I hadn’t eaten a single bite. I spent most of the time staring at my tray of food and wondering what I was going to do if Dr. Walsh followed through on his threat to fire me. First, I would be angry, then I would probably cry. And then I’d have to go home and tell Sebastian and my mom that I couldn’t last more than a couple of weeks out in the “real world” that Sebastian was always ranting about.

Nope.

I couldn’t let that happen. Not today.

More determined than ever to get the samples I needed, I piled Tarog’s food onto my tray with my own lunch and carried it back to the lab. I wasn’t even the slightest bit surprised to see the containers were right where I’d left them inside his cell. Tarog hadn’t moved a muscle, and was looking at me with a smug grin when I walked in.

“I hope you aren’t hungry,” I shrugged, taking the long way around to my desk so he could see the food. “All I need is a few minutes of your cooperation, and I’ll give you as much food as you want.”

He ignored the food and gave me a slow, heated look. “It doesn’t matter what you brought me. I’m hungry for something else.”

Oh, lord. Why did he have to look at me like that? Why did his voice have to be so low, rumbly, and sexy? I had to stay strong, though. Giving in and doing the thing he wanted me to do would be… well, it would probably feel good, but it would be a bad idea. A horrible idea that would cross so many lines! But I was still tempted, and I was afraid he could sense my conflicted feelings. Which was just one more reason why I needed to stay strong and firm with him.

“I’m not going to give you anything else, Tarog.” I carried the tray over to my desk and turned back to face him. “Why are you being so stubborn? Do you realize I’ll lose my job if I don’t turn in these samples by the end of the day? Dr. Walsh made it very clear that he’ll fire me if I don’t follow through with this.”

“Would that be so awful? Working for the fat man makes you unhappy, yes?”

I waved a dismissive hand. “I don’t have to get along with my boss all the time, but I do have to keep this job. And that means I need to keep my head down and follow orders, especially when I haven’t even received my first paycheck yet. He could fire me today, and I wouldn’t even have the money to put gas in my car so I could look for a new job. Don’t you get it?”

Maddeningly, Tarog shook his head. “I don’t understand all of your words, but I do know this. If you escape this place with me, you won’t need to worry about finding another job like this one.
